What is the Coming of Age Ceremony
This day celebrates young people turning 20, the age considered to be “becoming an adult”. For example, in Japan, the legal age for purchasing and consuming alcohol and cigarettes is 20 years old.
The ceremony plays a significant role in upholding Japan’s traditional culture and marks the moment when young individuals embrace their social responsibilities.
For Japanese people, the Coming of Age Ceremony is a special day where everyone gathers in their hometowns for the celebration, dresses up in traditional “Kimono/Hakama”, catches up with their fellow classmates, and enjoys the beginning of adulthood.

Why we organize this event in Dunedin
The Coming of Age Ceremony is one of the biggest events for Japanese people. However, us international students can’t attend this important ceremony because we are on exchange. This is why we decided to organise a Coming of Age Ceremony ourselves, here in Dunedin!
Since we are here for this momentous occasion, we wanted to make this a special memory for not only the Japanese students but also everyone here in Dunedin! So feel free to come along as this event is open to anyone and everyone to participate!

The event is starting 'Japan time', that's 3PM sharp! So, please arrive early. The formal part of the ceremony is till 4PM and from there we'll have 'free time' to mingle and chat and take photos together.
